Severe symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia that require immediate medical attention include being unable to urinate at all, finding blood in the urine, feeling a lot of pain in the urinary tract and lower belly, having to urinate frequently, and experiencing a fever and chills. Generally speaking, symptoms of BPH tend to worsen over time.

Symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia fall into two categories, those that start in the bladder and those that are caused by pressure on the urethra, otherwise known as obstructive symptoms and irritative symptoms. Obstructive symptoms have to do with voiding, while irritative symptoms have to do with filling and storage. Voiding is the bodily process of discharging waste matter from the body, and BPH-related symptoms include diminished stream, incomplete emptying, urinary hesitancy, interruption of the urinary stream, straining, and dribbling. As for irritative symptoms, these include urinary urgency, nocturia, decreased void volume, and dysuria. Nocturia refers to waking up multiple times in the night to use the bathroom, while dysuria refers to difficult or painful urination.

In general, obstructive symptoms are more common yet less bothersome, whereas irritative symptoms interfere more with daily life and are therefore the reason that most sufferers seek treatment. Many of the urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia appear in other diseases as well. Namely bladder and kidney stones, overactive bladder, urinary tract infections, problems with nerves that control the bladder, urethral stricture, prostate and bladder cancer, scarring in the bladder neck, interstitial cystitis, and prostatitis. It is therefore sometimes difficult for doctors to diagnose BPH without conducting a series of tests to rule out other conditions.

Looking at age and ethnicity, 50% of all men will show some signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia by the age of 60, and 90% of all men will show signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia by the age of 85. Approximately half of these sufferers will experience symptoms that are severe enough to require some sort of treatment. Moreover, black men tend to experience symptoms of BPH at a younger age than Caucasian men, and Hispanic men are more likely than Asian men to develop symptoms.

The good news is that there are a number of ways to control symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. For instance, exercising and eating a heart-healthy diet can encourage normal bladder emptying and help manage weight, which is important for the prostate. In addition to these lifestyle changes, it’s a good idea to limit the intake of antihistamines and decongestants, since these allergy and cold medications tighten the muscles responsible for passing urine through the body, making it more difficult to urinate. Lastly, cold temperatures can increase urinary urgency, so it’s smart to stay warm whenever possible.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/9100-benign-prostatic-enlargement-bph

https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/urologic-diseases/prostate-problems/prostate-enlargement-benign-prostatic-hyperplasia

https://www.webmd.com/men/prostate-enlargement-bph/enlarged-prostate-your-bph-symptoms-score#1

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Common symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia include leakage of urine, incomplete emptying of the bladder, the need to strain when urinating, blood in the urine, the sudden urge to urinate, pain when urinating, pain after ejaculating, a weak urinary stream, dribbling after urination, and the need to urinate more than once per night. Most of them seem to have a common denominator – a weakness in the immune system.

Common Risk Factors for Herpes Zoster

1. Age

Advanced age increases the risk of developing shingles and by the time you get to age 85, the chance of getting it is fifty-fifty.[ii] Additionally, older people tend to suffer more complications. This might be from immunosenescence – the gradual decline in immunity associated with increasing age.

2. Immunosuppression

Diseases that compromise the immune system, like cancer, AIDS, diabetes, leukemia, chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), multiple sclerosis, and lymphoma increase the risk of shingles, as do immunosuppressive medications for things like rheumatoid arthritis and bone marrow and organ transplants. Drugs like corticosteroids, chemotherapy, and transplant-related immunosuppressive medications are also associated with shingles.

3. Being female

In a recent prospective study, researchers found that herpes zoster was significantly associated with being female. [iii] They examined the data on more than 27 million individuals and out of almost a million diagnosed shingles cases, 62% were women.

Autoimmune diseases also affect more women than men. All of this could be attributed to hormonal fluctuations, especially during pregnancy and menopause, both of which can trigger immune-related diseases such as diabetes. Researchers have noticed an association between both pregnancy and menopause and autoimmune diseases.

4. Micronutrient deficiencies

The efficient functioning of the immune system is heavily dependent on optimal nutrition. Two of the most important nutrients for immune function are vitamins C and D. Vitamin C deficiency means weakened immunity and therefore a higher susceptibility to infections, including viral one like herpes zoster.

Almost every tissue type in the body has receptors for vitamin D and it has a profound effect on the immune system. “Considering the importance of vitamin D in host immunity, we hypothesize that vitamin D acts as an effect-modifier for the entire herpes zoster spectrum with regard to disease susceptibility, manifestation, efficacy of pharmacologic management, and emergent complications during treatment.” [iv]

5. Declining Immunity to VZN

“This reactivation occurs when immunity to VZV declines because of aging or immunosuppression.”[v]

Shingles occurs when cell-mediated immunity to chicken pox wanes and drops below a certain level. With age, the memory of immune cells can decrease along with the decline in mental memory.

Ironically, the chicken pox vaccine has been linked to an increase in shingles. Adults who previously contracted chicken pox in their youth can get a natural “booster” shot to their immunity to varicella zoster by contact with children with chicken pox. The vaccine has changed all of this.

“Mass use of the chickenpox vaccine by children has eliminated the opportunity for natural asymptomatic boosting of immunity in adults and left adults vulnerable to shingles later in life.”[vi]

6. Depression

Depression seems to increase the risk for shingles. A population-based case-control study of subjects in Denmark and the United Kingdom concluded: “mood disorders were associated with an increased risk of zoster.”

The authors of the study write: “Zoster is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) from sensory ganglia when cell-mediated immunity (CMI) wanes below a critical level. Mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety, have been associated with impaired CMI. In particular, it has been demonstrated that VZV-specific CMI is reduced in major depression and is negatively associated with severity.”[vii]

[i] https://www.cdc.gov/shingles/about/overview.html

[ii] https://www.pennlive.com/life/2012/06/for_seniors_85_and_older_shing.html

[iii] https://www.infectiousdiseaseadvisor.com/home/topics/sexually-transmitted-diseases/incidence-of-herpes-zoster-higher-among-women-and-older-adults/

[iv] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26163058

[v] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2664599/

[vi] https://www.nvic.org/Vaccines-and-Diseases/Chickenpox.aspx

[vii] https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/187/5/1019/4557910

[2

post-22","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-myprostatenews
["GET
